{"id":170,"date":"2022-02-25T16:24:43","date_gmt":"2022-02-25T15:24:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/haros.locean-ipsl.upmc.fr\/?page_id=170"},"modified":"2024-08-07T13:25:45","modified_gmt":"2024-08-07T11:25:45","slug":"context","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/bioglider.ipsl.fr\/?page_id=170","title":{"rendered":"Context"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Ocean is crucial for the climate yet unknown<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Considering the importance of the oceans in the overall function of the earth\u2019s ecosystems, the water column, in particular the deep-sea, is significantly under-surveyed in time and space [1].<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The ocean interior remains largely invisible for human eyes and the critical processes that happen there will remain obscure until novel techniques enable us to observe them at the spatio-temporal resolution at which they occur [2].<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">At the moment, the data collected by conventional methods (i.e. ship, moorings) is scarcely distributed both in time and space, and do not meet the basic requirements posed by these challenges.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Marine Strategy Framework Directive-MSFD and the Integrated Ecosystem Assessment-IEA<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This technological gap has been clearly identified by the EU and the USA who placed the identification of new monitoring tools and best sampling practices for the assessment of environmental status at the core of their international management policies\/strategies (i.e., the Marine Strategy Framework Directive-MSFD and the Integrated Ecosystem Assessment-IEA, as a support to the Ecosystem-Based Management-EBM [3]).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">[1] Thurber, AR, et al., 2014. \u201cEcosystem function and services provided by the deep sea\u201d.
